This Fall 2008, Six Seconds will be launching the Synapse Institute: Center of Innovation in Learning.
Integrating brain-based theory and practice, the institute will offer four types of programs from Monday to Saturday: 1) Academic Day Program for Talented/Gifted Children (ages 5-7, M-F, 9AM-12 NN); 2) Specialized Arts Program (ages 5-7,1-3 PM); 3) After-School Programs for children with Asperger’s and High Functioning Autism (3:30-5:30 PM; ages 5-14); and 4) Research-based Learning with Digital Media (ages 11-17, 5:30-7 PM).
The institute is led by renowned leaders in the field of K-12 education, including Anabel Jensen Ph.D. (co-founder of Six Seconds and former director of Nueva School), Karen Stone McCown, M.A. (co-founder of Six Seconds and founder of Nueva School), and Gigi Carlson, M.A. (co-founder of Multipleminds Educational Foundation). Six Seconds (www.6seconds.org) is an emotional intelligence non-profit with research-based tools and exceptional education programs for diverse types of learners. Six Seconds’ purpose is to create optimal learning environments where young people develop key skills for academic and lifelong success.
We are looking for parents interested in enrolling their children ages 5-14 with Asperger’s and High Functioning Autism in an after-school program. Each class will be limited to four students, whose expert teacher will be supported by education specialists.
The after-school program will provide a nurturing and state-of-the-art learning program designed to: 1) improve social/emotional skills; 2) enhance productivity in school and play environments; 3) build creative and critical thinking skills; and 4) foster and support mainstreaming. The learning strategy integrates constructivist and humanist philosophies and builds both intellectual and emotional intelligences. A diagnostic profile supported by personalized learning will be provided.
Children will engage in active learning, building their creative and critical thinking skills through cutting-edge multi-sensory and multimedia projects. Enrollees may choose among three strands offered: 1) Creative Writing, Design, and Publishing; 2) Learning through Audio-Video Narratives; and 3) Integrated Arts Program.
