File this under "things that keep you up at night" (otherwise known as: I'm trying to stretch this to justify posting it on the Sleep Forum when it's not really sleep related!)
I just had to share this. Lately I've been reading labels on all my skin-care products. I've sort of been trying to avoid products that use petroleum. After all, this is still oil consumption, and shouldn't we all be trying to cut back? Anyway, I bought a new face cleanser the other day. Got it home, used it in the shower. THEN decided to read the label. Boy was I in for a surprise. I did find something made from petroleum...get ready for this..PROPANE was listed in the ingredients. That's right, propane, as in the stuff in our backyard grills. The highly flammable liquid that they won't even allow on moving trucks. In my face cleanser. Liquid petroleum, as it turns out.
At first I thought, well maybe it has something to do with the fact that the cleanser is a "mousse" and is in a compressed can. But I checked a can of shaving cream and there's nothing like propane listed there. I was grasping at straws anyway, a little bit shocked that I found this. I can't believe that it's safe to put propane on my face. I'm sure it's in some minute amount, but just the thought of basically putting lighter fluid all over my face sort of freaked me out. Needless to say, I'll be returning that particular item. I might even write to the company.
I felt a little better after looking at this site, http://www.npga.org/i4a/pages/index...., which says propane is non-toxic and dissipates once released into the air, but it doesn't say anything about whether it's safe for skin. This is just something I'm not willing to take a chance on.
BTW, does anyone ever watch "King of the Hill"? Could this be what Hank Hill is referring to when he says he sells "propane and propane accessories"? he he.

Funny comments, I love that show!
It sounds like the propane might actually be used to make the "mousse" as you first thought, but still kind of weird.
I'm sort of on the same mission, I've been addicted to using vaseline as lip balm for years. It honestly works better than anything else I've tried- and I've tried lots! When my daughter started wanting to put on "lips" like mommy, I realized what I was actually using.
So far, I'm having some trouble finding something I like that's all natural, if anyone has suggestions that would be great!!

Funny you should ask. Burt's Bees has a lip balm that I like a lot. That's actually the first product I replaced. The one I have is the one with pomegranate, but if I'm not mistaken, none of Burt's Bees products have petroleum, because they use bee's wax instead. Another thing you can use that's plant-based is pure lanolin, like what you buy for cracked nipples when breastfeeding. This is especially good for cracked skin, even feet, and it's totally safe for kids.
I also got a lotion from Trader Joe's that seems pretty safe, and it's not bad but I'll be looking for something a little richer for winter. Glad to know someone else is looking for these things! Please share if you make any great "finds!"

Thanks Patti! I'm actually using one form Burts Bees right now, it works OK, and yes, it's "all natural"
I would feel so weird using the lanolin on my lips after it's previous use
But it probably works great!

ha ha! Yeah, I know what you mean about the lanolin, except it's not weird at all. It's just a plant-based "wax" (I don't really know if that's what they call it) that basically helps seal in moisture and protect the area. It's really safe, which is why it's used for the aforementioned purpose in the first place.
(It's okay for babies to ingest.) I used to use it on my baby's chapped lips...and then a nurse recommended it for my stepdad to use on his feet! My husband even uses it for razor burn. And if anyone in our family is squeamish, it's him! LOL!
