Stand up / Get up without holding onto something
How can I help my son learn how to stand up without using something to brace himself?
My son is 13months old, and is a very good crawler and walker. He never falls when walking. But if he decides to sit down to play with something, he cannot stand up independently yet. He always crawls to something to hold on to, to help him stand back up. I've tried a couple of diff. things to get him to try to stand up by himself, but I have yet to succeed. I know he has the ability and balance to do it because I'll hold on to him and let him stand up using me, and he doesn't 'pull' up. He just holds on and uses his legs. Does anyone have any 'excercise'/'technique' suggestions on how I might help him develope the understanding that he can do it on his own?

He'll just do it on his own. There are some things that you really can't teach a child. He needs to build his confidence to know that he can do it. I have a daredevil - he stood up on his own before he ever crawled - and at 9.5 months he let go and took his first steps. In my opinion, I would have preferred him to stay seated a while longer! Some kids do take longer to do things, because every child will do things at his/her own rate. Give him time, and he'll suprise you one day!
