Starting Kindergarten-drive or bus?

My child will be going to Kindergarten in the fall. I'm not sure about the school bus. 5 yr. olds mixed with kids as old as 8th graders? I don't know. I know it's inevitable they are exposed to a lot of negative stuff along the way. But, when I think of a school bus I think of the kids letting go after sitting in classes all day, trying to impress friends they are in so close proximity to (possibly by picking on a younger child) and a bus driver not paying attention (not my kid, what do I care?) If I drive to and from school everyday will I be stuck doing it for the long haul cause my child will be used to that and therefore refuse to take the bus later on?

My son attends a pre-k that is run by our school district.  He takes a small bus to and from school.  In our district kindergartners also take the little buses and the elementary is only k-4.  Because of the half day schedule they don't get to ride with grades 1-4.  My son loves to ride the bus.  He brags to all his buddies how he gets to ride a bus. I am worried about disapointing him next year.  He thinks he is going to get to wait at the corner and ride the 'big' bus with the older kids, sigh.  I am assuming that if you are k-8 you are in a small rual school.  On those the routes are also longer so the amount of time he would spend on a bus would also be a concern.  Don't worry about taking him to and from school for kindergarten and being committed to it for the next 12 years.  Take him this year.  Next year he will probably get upset if he doesn't get to ride the bus.  Next year he will have made friends who ride busses and he may even take some ribbing from classmates if you continue to drive him to and from school.  At that point your first grader will be anxious to cut the apron strings and not be seen with you, not commit you to continued chauffer duty.
